James Preston Book

James Preston Book, son of Jacob Book and Mary Glenn,  was born 10 March 1859 in Plain Grove, Plain Grove Township, Lawrence County, Pennsylvania. According to his daughter, Marybelle, his middle name was chosen simply because it "went well between his first and his last."

His father, Jacob Book, died when James was only 9 years of age.  The estate he had left to his family was, according to Marybelle Book Anderson,  stolen by the executor of his estate, a family "friend". Because of this, James was forced to leave school to help support his family. He worked on farms, doing anything he could find for work. Perhaps this explains why he did not marry until age 36 - a sense of responsibility towards his mother and siblings.

Regardless, on 20 May 1895, James married Sierra Nevada Morrow, who was the daughter of George Van Eman and Margaret Ann (McConahy) Morrow.
When they married, she lived in Moravia and he was a farmer, living in Taylor Township, Lawrence County, PA. They are listed as both being single and never married before, and not being related to each other.

James and Sierra had three daughters, Margaret, Marybelle, and Laura Matilda.  Laura had Downs syndrome and died at age three years.  She was in the arms of her father when she died.

The notes on the photo are in her sister, Margaret's handwriting.

Although James Preston did not complete a formal education, one cannot say that he was an uneducated man. He attended lectures and concerts all of his life. He also served as a member of the School Board, showing his deep commitment to education. He also supported his daughter, Marybelle, as she pursued her degree in education.

The family lived in Moravia, Lawrence County, Pennsylvania. Their home has been remodeled but is still inhabited.

Nearby runs the Beaver River which Margaret remembered crossing, first on foot, and later on the bridge structure as it was erected, while on her way to school each day.
